My jewelry a little, a lot, passionately or not at all.
As the years go by, you’ve purchased a few pieces of jewelry to complement your outfits. They’re perhaps carefully stored in beautiful boxes designed for this purpose. So much so that you haven’t even realized that you haven’t worn most of them for ages. It’s too luxurious for your everyday life. It’s out of fashion, or simply no longer matches the image you want to project today. Because yes, jewelry is a fashion accessory, a way to stand out or blend in, just like clothing. Even if it’s not exclusively reserved for them, it’s still a feminine accessory. So whether you’re a die-hard fan of changing your jewelry daily or loyal to your favorite pieces that you wear every day or not, today we’re going to declutter and ask ourselves the right questions. A slightly brighter Wednesday-sort than usual this week.
The jewels of my life or this jewel that never leaves me
Whether or not they have a high market value, we consider our jewelry as talismans, sometimes unconsciously.
Full of symbolism, jewelry marks important moments in your life. Your engagement ring, your wedding band, your grandmother’s pendant or your favorite lucky bracelet, the piece of jewelry that represents each of your children, or a gift you received…
We realize the importance of this piece of jewelry in our lives when we lose it, or worse, when it’s stolen. It’s as if we’re losing a part of our past or the person it represented. Sometimes we inherit jewelry that makes us uncomfortable. Do I want to keep my mom’s wedding ring even though my parents are divorced? Yet, their marriage is part of my story…
Avoid burglaries
Do you own jewelry of great commercial and/or sentimental value but you don’t wear it? I bet it’s in a beautiful box, in your room… It’s classic! It’s the first place the evil thief will visit! Place it in your safe at the bank; it’s the safest. But not everyone can afford this luxury. So, rack your brains and place it in an incongruous (but still secure) location in your home.
Junk, junk and other fancies
The advantage of costume jewelry is that you can enhance your outfits, stay on trend, and vary your look without breaking the bank and without worrying about breakage, theft, or loss.
(Oh, yes, I forgot, I’ll clarify what “cacaille” means for my non-Belgian readers: definition: Colloquial – In Belgium, it is said of an object without value.)
Today, you can find jewelry at bargain prices: don’t be too quick to succumb to the temptation of cheapness. Buying “cheap” means buying multiple items… which isn’t any more economical and has a real impact on our environment.
There are beautiful, high-quality costume jewelry pieces out there. I know a thing or two about it, having been a representative for the Victoria-Benelux brand myself, even today. And I’ve been for 9 years! I particularly like earrings and rings: they’re my guilty pleasure… which I sort through once a year to make room for new items.
My little creative artisans
If you like to stand out while making an ethical purchase, find small jewelry artisans near you. Here, I’m highlighting the work of a talented designer who recently started out: Candice De Rijcke . I really like her work, and I invite you to discover it.

Check your insurance policy and discuss it with your broker.
How to sort your jewelry?
Give your loved ones jewelry that no longer fits (rings, necklaces, or bracelets that have become too small, for example) or that is still in good condition but not very valuable. I remember, when I was little, that Mom gave me several necklaces and long necklaces that she had worn in the 70s. Some were magnificently flashy! And I had a lot of fun dressing up in them or imagining treasure hunts with these jewels that shone like in pirate movies!
Sell: Gold or silver jewelry that’s too damaged or mismatched. If it has no sentimental value to you, there’s no point letting it sit in your drawers. It’s dead material. With the money you save, treat yourself to a meal with your family! Or something you really need.
You can also sell costume jewelry that you no longer wear for various reasons online or at a flea market to give it a new lease on life. And why not organize a jewelry closet sale with your friends or colleagues at work?
